Time to get hygge! Wholesome events to keep you feeling cosy this autumn
Even if sun, sea and SPF are your thing, most of us would agree that the autumnal months hold a certain kind of nostalgia that we long for by the end of August. I’m often left dreaming of the leaves crunching beneath my feet, the smell of firewood burning from chimneys in the distance, and a warm cup of something delicious nestled safely in my hands. Not only does that feeling have a name, but it’s actually a Danish cultural phenomenon which dates all the way back to the late 20th century called hygge.
What is hygge?
Hygge (pronounced hoo-ga) is a Danish word which encapsulates the feeling of warmth, cosiness and safety which can be achieved through simple acts in the colder seasons. These include anything that might bring you a sense of comfort — perhaps it’s lighting candles, baking or snuggling up under a blanket with a book as a rainstorm bellows outside.
An important component of the hygge lifestyle is the unique beauty of the great outdoors during the autumn months. There’s no better way to experience that feeling of cosiness than in the fresh air, bundled up in a warm scarf and jacket and surrounded by the vibrant colours of the changing leaves.
There are a huge range of nature-based, wholesome events happening throughout the UK from September onwards that are sure to capture the true spirit of hygge. Check out some of the festivals, shows and nature events we’re currently listing:
Bakewell Autumn Festival
The historic market town of Bakewell will be running a free Autumn Festival with a huge range of food, drink, crafts, plants and gifts to warm your cockles and lift the soul. With over 100 stalls on offer, just some of the things to get involved in are James McKay’s Owls of Harry Potter Fame, children’s rides, face painting and much more.
Malvern Autumn Show
This harvest festival will take place in the scenic town of Malvern, Worcestershire and offers the ultimate seasonal extravaganza. Marvel at the wonders of the CANNA UK National Giant Vegetables Championship, RHS flower show display and enjoy entertainment for the whole family. Have a wander round the new open-air food and drink village and indulge at the renowned Malvern Gin Show.
Harvest Day Celebration Picnic
If you find yourself near the idyllic town of St Andrews this month, be sure to head to the Harvest Day Celebration Picnic at their Botanic Gardens. Looking to live out your autumnal cottage-core dream? Practical sessions will be running all day for you to watch and learn harvesting skills such as willow weaving, threshing and milling.
If you’re particularly green-fingered, there will be plenty of opportunity to meet Friends of St Andrews Botanic Garden and members of the team who are happy to give tours of the grounds. Delicious seasonal picnic baskets are also available as the cherry on top!
Mindfulness in Nature Walk
With new seasons come new beginnings, and the perfect chance to reset and refresh. What better opportunity to do so than wandering through the peaceful landscape of Leonardslee Gardens, Horsham. Dust off those walking boots and join Emma Weaver as she guides you through an early morning Mindfulness in Nature autumn walk to get grounded amongst nature, with a hot cup of herbal tea waiting for you at the end for that ultimate sense of hygge.
Celtic Autumn at the Crannog Centre
Transport yourself to the Iron Age this autumn with a Harvest Festival at the Crannog Centre in Aberfeldy. As part of the International Storytelling Festival, take hygge back in time and taste a variety of ancient dishes including smoked Loch Tay Trout, baked honey cakes, stewed wild fruits, bog butter and cheeses.
