We list a wide variety of sporting events, marathons and charity runs that take place across the UK, and the annual TCS London Marathon is arguably the most famous of all. Every year an array of runners are welcomed to the heart of the UK for one of the world’s most popular athletic challenges that is watched around the world.

As one of the World Marathon Majors, the London Marathon attracts a stellar pool of athletes from across the globe to compete in the world-famous race. Among those running in the elite field this year are World Championship silver medallist Judith Korir, two-time runner-up Vincent Kipchumba and World Championship silver medallist Mosinet Geremew.

Three Lionnesses from England’s 2022 Euro champions will officially start the race, including captain Leah Williamson, Ellen White and 2001 Mini London Marathon winner Jill Scott MBE. Other familiar faces taking part in this year’s event include Sir Mo Farah, Chris Evans, Mark Wright and Cynthia Erivo.

Taking place on Sunday 2 October, the gruelling route of the London Marathon includes 26.2 miles across the streets of England’s capital. The challenge commences at Blackheath and passes the iconic Cutty Sark ship before crossing the world-renowned Tower Bridge. The route then takes participants through Canary Wharf before they cross the finish line on The Mall in front of Buckingham Palace, cheered on by hundreds of supportive spectators.

Since it first took place in 1981, the London Marathon has raised more than £1 billion for charity. The chosen charity for this year’s event is The British Heart Foundation, although there are countless other causes for runners to raise funds for, including The Children’s Trust, Mental Health Foundation, MS Trust, Crisis UK, Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, and more.
